Are We Born Gay?
Does It Really Matter?

By Ron Browning

Let's consider for a moment the inner turmoil of feeling that God gave us homosexual attractions and at the same time commanded us to not embrace such behaviors.  The argument has been promoted now some 25 years (really for thousands of years) that homosexuality is not a sin but a natural attraction that God created within... our nature so to speak.  Even in mainline Christianity homosexuality is being embraced as acceptable to God referring to Scriptural prohibitions as same sexed crimes against minors.

No wonder we struggle so deeply with this inner turmoil.  It feels right but it feels wrong.  And after several generations of cultural programming as a society we are confused.   And for us who face the struggle day in and day out it is so easy to go along with the crowd... be politically correct... tolerant... especially when its our own feelings.

Well let’s get real.  I like the position SCF takes from the Creation in Genesis.  If you go back and read the first 2 chapters of Genesis you find a common thread.  God created and then said His creation was good.  On the sixth day God created Adam... one man... and He breathed into that man life!  From Adam He created Eve and each of us.  But notice that at the end of the sixth day when God finished creating Adam and Eve He again said it is good.  Then notice that God was finished.  He stopped creating.  He rested from creating.  He created male and female, not male and male... and He said it was good.  God did not create homosexuals.  He created man and woman for spiritual and physical union in marriage.

New Century Version

Malachi 2

2:15 God made husbands and wives to become one body and one spirit for his purpose -- so they would have children who are true to God. So be careful, and do not break your promise to the wife you married when you were young.

So if God did not create homosexuals or if He doesn't grant same-sexed attractions... where do they come from?  SIN you say?  Of course...  How about the old devil?  Yes!  But what does this really mean?

Consider the fall of Man.  What happened to us when we fell into sin?

The New Living Translation

Jeremiah 17

17:9 "The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

In the Garden, Satan convinced us that we could be equal with God if we knew both good and evil.  This was a lie.  By knowing evil we became double-minded and DECEIVED! The result is that we began to exchange God's truth for a lie...  Our nature became deceitful and desperately wicked.

Now let's add another thought to the equation.  What happened to man physically?  Death became a reality.  Medical personnel encounter all the flaws within the human body... the death, decay, and destruction.   The gay community has argued for years that we are born gay... that it is genetic.  Most of fundamental and evangelical Christianity has argued NO!  God didn't create homosexuals...  But the argument really is apples and oranges.

You see we are born in sin.... in death, decay, and destruction.  We lost the image into which we were created.  The argument as to whether we are born or not born homosexual is really stupid.  We are born in sin and if our natural sinful bent is homosexual then we are born homosexual and as we go through life our sin grows and consumes us, a blazing fire leading us straight to Hell.

It doesn't matter if it’s genetic because our genes are fallen into sin.  It doesn't matter if it's chemical because all the chemical releases in our body are fallen into sin.  It doesn't matter if it's cellular, neurological, or any other physiological reason.  For that matter it doesn't matter if it's psychological, sociological, or any "logical' reasoning.  All of our-self is fallen into sin and is deceitful and desperately wicked.

For example, how many children have to be taught to lie?  None!  I know this from experience ... And any child left without some instruction in the truth will grow deeper into lies.  How many guys have you met that had to be taught to want sex... to look at porn... to masturbate.  Most of us, no matter our introduction to sexual pleasure, took to it like a duck takes to water.  You see, we are born sinners and it is our nature to do: SIN!  Yes this includes homosexual behavior and even homosexual attraction... If you don't believe me read Romans 1: 18 and following and Romans 3: 10 and following.

We are born into sin down to the very genetic structure that details our physical being.  In Psalm 139 David acknowledges to God that he was conceived in sin... not that his parents were sinning but that from conception forward he was... we are... sinners.

I think one of the most interesting scientific facts discovered in the past century is that our genetic code isn't evolving but is actually devolving.  With every generation since the fall of man our genetic code is loosing information.  Wow! Even our genes are dysfunctional... deceived and desperately wicked!

Now listen!  In no way does this excuse sin.  Just because we are born into sin does not excuse our sin.  As a matter of fact God holds us accountable... but He lovingly offers the only solution.  Let’s look at a passage in Titus.

New Century Version

Titus

3:3 In the past we also were foolish. We did not obey, we were wrong, and we were slaves to many things our bodies wanted and enjoyed. We spent our lives doing evil and being jealous. People hated us, and we hated each other.

3:4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior was shown,

3:5 He saved us because of his mercy. It was not because of good deeds we did to be right with him. He saved us through the washing that made us new people through the Holy Spirit.

3:6 God poured out richly upon us that Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ our Savior.

3:7 Being made right with God by his grace, we could have the hope of receiving the life that never ends.

3:8 This teaching is true, and I want you to be sure the people understand these things. Then those who believe in God will be careful to use their lives for doing well. These things are good and will help everyone.

Let's look at all God has done in our Great Salvation.  We are washed clean, we have received the Holy Spirit, we have been made right with God, and we have the HOPE of eternal life!

Let's read it again in the Message

The Message

Titus

3:3 It wasn't so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stubborn, dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back.

3:4 But when God, our kind and loving Savior God, stepped in,

3:5 He saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit.

3:6 Our Savior Jesus poured out new life so generously.

3:7 God's gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. And there's more life to come - an eternity of life!

3:8 You can count on this.

Did you notice in verse 3 the word "glands"...? "Ordered every which way by our glands,

In the New American Standard Bible verse 5 reads: He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

What is the connection here?  When God saved you and I He regenerated (re-gened) us...  Really, this is the actual meaning of the original term in the original language of the Bible.  The actual word Paul wrote to Titus.  God has not only done a spiritual work or even a mind, will, and emotional work ***BUT*** He has also begun the good work of restoring even our bodies, which He will raise up on the last day blameless! (Phil. 1:6)  Even our "glands" that drive us crazy and lead us to sin are being saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, our Excellent and Beautiful Savior!!!!  We are being washed inside and out.  Inside... all the way to the core of who we are.

It doesn't matter that we are born into sin even at a genetic level.  What matters is our Great Salvation!  Remember:

The Message

Ezekiel

36:25 I'll pour pure water over you and scrub you clean.

36:26 I'll give you a new heart; put a new spirit in you. I'll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that's God-willed, not self-willed.

36:27 I'll put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands.

36:28 You'll once again live

I have yet to read a Scripture about the new heart that includes homosexual behavior or even homosexual attractions.  You see, we are born again – re-born, re-gened!  Not with a nature to sin but now partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:3)... God's nature... which is pure and holy and full of love!  We are being restored to the state of our original creation before sin.  We are new creations... the old has PASSED AWAY... it has not only been conquered... not only overcome...  but it has been put to death... So believe it... Count it as true... Reckon it as yours... You have a new nature... a nature not deceived but birthed in truth... a nature not desperately wicked in homosexual thought and fantasy... but pure in heart a nature of repentance and faith, love and obedience, and in purity that rises above the standards (lifestyles) of the world.

The Message

Galatians 2     Read This Out Loud

2:20 Christ's life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not "mine," but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me

The Message

Romans 6     Keep Reading

6:6 Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the Cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life - no longer at sin's every beck and call! What we believe is this:

6:7, 8 If we get included in Christ's sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection

Say with me... I was born in sin... bent toward deception and the sexual sin of homosexuality but I have been saved... regenerated, restored... to share in the divine nature of God...  a nature not desperately wicked but pure in heart.  A nature of repentance and faith, love and obedience, purity that rises above the standards (homosexual behavior and attractions and lifestyles) of the world to live the Christ-life!  Wow!  The secret of the kingdom is...

Christ in me, my hope of glory!"
